In the image above, part of a person is portrayed holding a pair of sneakers. Though the picture only shows part of the woman, her athletic clothes and the backdrop of the track lead the viewer to believe that she is using the shoes for rigorous sporting activities, demonstrating their usefulness in that category. The sunset adds calming connotations to the image, reflecting on the product when the viewer recalls the Nike paradigm.
I remember discussing this image in class, and it is definitely a great example of signification - the sneakers, the clothing, and the backdrop all bring to mind concepts revolving around outdoor recreation and exercise/sports. I definitely feel like NIKE brand advertisements are overly prominent, especially with today's popular fitness culture, which take on the form of fitness blogs (fitblrs).
